Contour Launches New Anti-Ligature Products
Contour have introduced 3 new anti-ligature products to the market. The heating specialists provide LST radiators and covers to the educational, healthcare, security, social, commercial and mental health sector.
Contour saw first hand problems staff were facing in mental health environments, including continuously replacing products due to residents damaging them.
The new products include:
- Anti-Ligature Ventilation Grille
- Anti-Ligature TV Cabinet
- Anti-Ligature Light Switch Cover

Anti-Ligature Ventilation Grille
Standard plastic and even metal ventilation grilles aren’t suitable for mental health settings. The structural design and grille opening can create difficult situations for both staff and service users.
An example of this is that plastic grilles can easily be broken into sharp instruments, causing risk to staff and patients.
Another problem with traditional ventilation grilles is when they are positioned on walls and ceilings their openings can be used to create ligature points.
With suicide prevention being a high priority in mental heath wards, Contour’s anti-ligature ventilation grilles are a welcome addition to the product range.
Contour’s new anti-ligature ventilation grille has been developed with the safety and care of its users in mind.
Designed to be placed over the top of the standard ventilation grille, the anti-ligature ventilation grille incorporates the IP3x rated grille pattern. This can be seen on the DeepClean radiator covers in Contour’s range.
The perforated holes allow the air to pass through and minimises the risk of a service user being able to secure a ligature point on the grille.
Manufactured from either 1.5mm Zintec steel or 1.6mm Magnelis steel (for wet environments), Contour’s anti-ligature ventilation grilles are built with durability in mind.
The robust, full frame design enables quick access for cleaning and maintenance to ensure the grille stays clean, allowing the air to pass through and helping with infection control targets. As with most of Contour’s products, the anti-ligature ventilation grille is coated with BioCote® technology.
Anti-Ligature TV Cabinet
Televisions are an important factor to the well-being of patients in mental health facilities. It’s becoming increasingly accepted that, while ensuring buildings are safe, patients shouldn’t feel as if they’re being punished.
Whether their aim is to keep up to date with current affairs or to engage in entertaining and enjoyable content, access to screen media provides patients with a positive experience, aiding happiness and contentment.
The introduction of the anti-ligature TV cabinet was brought about through in-depth reflection on standard television cabinets in mental health settings.
Contour’s findings showed that televisions were the subject of frequent vandalism, costing wards time, effort and money. The costly nature of the vandalism made it necessary for us to develop a solution focussed on quality and longevity.
Now that more and more televisions are flat screen and placed on walls as a space-saving initiative, it is necessary to include this within our product design.
The anti-ligature TV cabinet is designed to be fitted neatly onto the wall, complimenting your current environment’s aesthetics.
Contour’s anti-ligature TV cabinet protects televisions by fully encapsulating them in a stylish wooden cabinet.
The cabinet has a strip-hinged front door that can only be opened with the keys provided ensuring authorised access only.
3mm holes are punched into the powder coated ventilation grilles that allow air to circulate through the cover, as well as allowing sound to transmit into the room.
Anti-Ligature TV Switch Cover
Damage limitation is at the forefront of Contour’s newest items and the anti-ligature light switch cover is no exception.
They recognise that the temptation to vandalise may become more attractive when there is potential to ‘self-harm,’ too. In this instance, a damaged light switch could cause electrocution.
The misuse of light switches can also lead to arguments and confrontations, where you have patients or Pupils playing with the switches repetitively.
One NHS trust also had the problem of staff using the emergency lights as night-time lighting by mistake and draining the batteries, which is not ideal when in an emergency situation.
Limiting these issues and risks is the main concept behind the anti-ligature light switch.
Authorised personnel will be in charge of accessing the cover opening to turn the lights on at the start and end of the day.

As with Contour’s LST radiators, the light switch cover and ventilation grille are covered in BioCote®, providing antimicrobial protection.
