Stallan-Brand has submitted plans for a  £75 million office-led scheme on the site of the now-closed BHS store in Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street.

The development, which includes a number of plots and buildings between Bath Street and Renfield Street, will see the northern part of the former BHS shop stripped back to its structure, extended two storeys upwards and converted into ‘boutique offices’ above new shops.

The store overlooking Bath Street will be replaced by a new 12-storey block, the largest element of the project, housing 12,000m² of Grade A office space.

Stallan-Brand associate Patrick Wilson said: ‘[This] redevelopment presents a unique opportunity to revitalise and transform the quality of the urban environment and public realm in this location, through the creation of new public spaces and improved and more appropriate mixed-use activity.’

‘Bath Street has a line of three-storey sandstone Georgian buildings stretching westward from Renfield Street. The majority of new buildings constructed in the past 40 years have taken their cue in scale and context from those. The exception has been Bewleys Hotel nearby.

‘Stallan-Brand has used the hotel’s height as justification and a marker in a few of their images. Like Bewleys the project will be controversial, for this will be the highest development on this corner and, although on first view it looks strikingly tall, it is also considered, refined and well-planned. The scheme gives a lot back to the city.

‘Consequently, I am supportive and believe it looks like a fine project and I would trust Stallan-Brand absolutely to carry it through with aplomb.’
