Jellico Gardens, Hemel Hampstead

This stunning Project was completed with HTA Design. Martin Jennings approached Graepels about manufacturing Decorative metal screens for a pavilion as part of HTA’s heritage lottery funded restoration of the Grade 2 registered Watergardens in Hemel Hempstead originally design by Landscape architect Geoffry Jellicoe.

Jennings notes that his own internal brief was for a historically appropriate reference to 20th century modernism utilising geometry rather than imagery.

The Screens of the pavilion needed to be light, movable and thin enough to allow light to percolate. The final design was a complex pattern using varying perforation (hole) sizes to avoid finger trapping this did not limit the design of the pattern, but was a consideration. Its was Imperative neither the perforations nor the spaces between should dominate in order to achieve the perception of changing patterns as you approach and move about the building.

Jennings comments; Graepels were enthusiastic partners and helped us determine the material and technical Considerations. There were a number of practical hurdles and Graepels found solutions to any problems that arose. It is always a pleasure to collaborate with manufacturers and specialist fabricators who are prepared to innovate and determined to deliver. I have rarely been as delighted to see a design completed and I do not know how I would have achieved it without Graepels.

Graepels are delighted to have worked with HTA Design on such a unique project. The Perforated Pattern is visually stunning and is a delight for the user to view both internally and externally as the light dapples through the surfaces. Supplied by HTA and is a great example of how our customers inspire us. We enjoy working closely with our Customers and are committed to ensuring that their visions become a reality.
