Openstudio Architects wins Taylor Wimpey Project 2020 Open Design competition

Infinite House by Openstudio Architects has won the Taylor Wimpey Project 2020 Open Design competition, held in partnership with the RIBA.Project 2020 involves exploring and evaluating trends, changes and new innovations in design, architecture, technology, materials and methodology with the aim of shaping, designing and future-proofing the Taylor Wimpey design range for 2020 and beyond, reflecting changing customer lifestyles.

By 2018, Taylor Wimpey plans to build a range of housing prototypes that is distinctive, aspirational, innovative, pragmatic, cost-effective and land-effective, demonstrating the inherent value of high-quality design and production.Openstudio Architects’ Infinite House prototypes are designed to offer maximum flexibility, customisation and cost efficiency, optimising both natural light and space. The winning concept was chosen for its ability to offer a variety of configurations and external envelopes, responsive to differing contexts while maintaining the necessary efficiency and cost-effectiveness of prototyping and serial fabrication.

Jennifer Beningfield, Principal of Openstudio Architects, comments:
“This competition’s commitment to transforming the quality of housing impressed us from the start. At all stages Taylor Wimpey has offered thoughtful, thorough and careful decision-making. There are many pressures on housing – cost, delivery methods, sustainability and context – but fundamentally a house should provide joy to its inhabitants and fulfil their needs. Our winning proposal focused on the quality of the houses themselves, and particularly on daylight and adaptable planning. We believe that Infinite House truly offers the flexibility and customisation that home owners are looking for and we look forward to working with the team at Project 2020 to realise and test the prototypes in the near future.”
