The VinylPlus® Product Label: a standard for sustainability

The VinylPlus® Product Label is a voluntary certification scheme developed by VinylPlus® in collaboration with the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and The Natural Step (TNS).

It is designed to ensure the sustainability of PVC products and their components, as well as the policies and performance of the companies producing them. To achieve this certification, companies must meet stringent requirements based on the five key challenges of the VinylPlus® voluntary sustainability programme:

  • Controlled loop management. This standard focuses on the efficient use of resources by promoting the use of recycled PVC and effective waste management. It encourages a circular economy approach within the PVC industry.
  • Organo-chlorine emissions. This pillar ensures that companies are responsibly sourcing their raw materials, minimizing emissions from their production processes, and contributing to a safer environment.
  • Sustainable use of additives. This requires the elimination of hazardous substances like cadmium and lead from PVC products, ensuring that the final products are safer for both people and the environment.
  • Sustainable energy and climate stability. This challenge requires companies to quantify their greenhouse gas emissions and actively work to reduce their energy consumption, contributing to the broader goal of climate stability.
  • Sustainability awareness. This requirement involves more than just product standards; it promotes the development of employees and encourages community engagement, ensuring that sustainability is a core part of the company’s culture.

In addition to the five key sustainability challenges, the certification also incorporates other vital criteria, such as organizational management and supply chain management. All these standards contribute to the final assessment, which requires a minimum total score of 30 points, ensuring a holistic approach to sustainability.
