Specify the Beautiful Recycling Solution for Modern Spaces from Method

Method have redesigned recycling for the modern workplace. The award-winning bins have been designed to complement modern aesthetics, so they can be out in the open plan of modern spaces where they effectively help users to recycle more, and waste less.

The bins, designed and made in New Zealand can be found globally in facilities such as Foster + Partners, the British Design Council, the Sydney Cricket Ground and many more.

Method opened their first London office in September 2018, after delivering to renowned UK architecture firm Foster + Partners in March, and have found widespread support for their sustainable recycling solution as the UK are trending towards zero waste to landfill.

Re-thinking how modern offices work has reshaped how they’re designed – from our desks, to our kitchens, to the power we use. Yet decisions about waste have long been neglected until the final hour.

Driving around New Zealand selling generic bins co-founders Steven and India Korner consistently saw workplaces trying to recycle without the tools to be successful or businesses that are apathetic about recycling. Bins were ugly and inconsistent with office design and often hidden away where they are ineffective.

The couple, with backgrounds in product and graphic design, engineering, and the world of commercial leasing, spent three years mastering Method’s award-winning products and recyclable packaging – holding focus groups, preparing prototypes, and even assisting cleaners on night-shifts.

All of this hard work paid off, resulting in the colour-coded and ultimately behaviour-changing Method 60L Office Recycling Bins. Designed for the modern workplace, they connect together to form flexible recycling stations that can be easily adapted to the needs of any building.

Method’s recycling solution is designed to be visible in modern workplaces where they are most effective, contributing to modern aesthetics rather than detracting. Such as the patented Bag Retainer system designed to hold the bin liner in place seamlessly, while ensuring a sleek finish.

Method have received continued industry attention winning 3 Best in Design awards from the Designers Institute of New Zealand for their signature bins, recyclable packaging, and for their new website. Most recently, they were awarded Best Emerging Business at the New Zealand Export Awards, and shortly after were highly commended in the NZ Best Emerging Business category at the NZ International Business Awards.

With their signature bins Method pioneered the concept of Open Plan Recycling, bringing the recycling stations out in the open, changing the way people interact with waste. Visible recycling bins reinforce accountability, which Method found is a key component for progress.

When people know they’re being watched, even subconsciously, they tend to take more thought over their decisions and are more likely to sort their waste accurately. Further, united by a larger purpose, users are encouraged to consider their waste habits at home.

Herriot Melhuish O’Neill Architects specify Methods bins to their clients as well as their own offices, Senior Associate Karl Wipatene said “Method’s bins were a game changer; their sleek lines, functionality and quality construction gave us a product that we were happy to put in prominent locations within our own studios as well as the office fit-outs we design for clients.”

Recycling can significantly reduce the impact a building has on the environment, is cost effective compared to other disposal methods, and customers are becoming more sensitive to sustainable business practices. For these reasons and many more, it’s becoming increasingly important for organisations to implement effective waste and recycling systems.
