Zaha Hadid, Wilkinson Eyre, Alison Brooks, FAT and Caruso St John are among 18 UK practices competing for the European Union’s contemporary architecture Mies van der Rohe award.

A total of 18 UK projects have been included in the long list of 355 from across the EU.

The projects, which also include Loyn Architects’ Outhouse in Gloucestershire to Peter Barber Architects’ Holmes Road Studios in London, will be whittled down to a shortlist of 40 in the coming months, with five finalists due in April.

The winner will be announced on May 26 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, marking several days of Open Doors throughout Europe during which sites of the shortlisted works will be open for visit to the general public.

Out of 260 European cities, only London, Barcelona and Copenhagen had managed to gain six or more works on the 2017 list, with Berlin, Oslo, Bucharest, Istanbul, Granada, Dublin and Ljubljana managing to have five nominations.
