A tribute to the great masters Issho from Carpet Edition | Design RAUM

The rich heritage of the grand masters of the past is alive and well in the contemporary world, many of its principles, techniques and ideas continue to influence the way spaces and objects are designed. The homage to Carlo Scarpa and Memoriale Brion is immediately visible in the new Issho rug designed by RAUM for Carpet Edition. The most emblematic and comprehensive masterpiece of 20th century Modernism, the Memoriale is a cross between Western rationality and Eastern spirituality, a place full of symbolism that touches the heart, a contemplation on Earthly life and beyond, but above all a love song.

Issho – a word which means “together” in Japanese- is captured in the architecture of the entrance where the perfect union of two circles gives access to the Memoriale, bringing with it the allegory of the bond between complimentary opposites; Yin and Yang, masculine and feminine, light and shadow, which reach a sublime sense of eternity through their fusion.

Composed of two separate modules, Issho creates the symbolic union inspired by the Memoriale Brion – and other possible configurations – in a masterful balance between positive and negative space. Both elements are 140×120 cm, are hand tufted with New Zealand Wool, and are distinguished from one another by the contrasting perimeters: a low profile border for one module and fringe for the other. The contrast also manifests in the colour combination selection, brick and violet which recall the border mosaic on the perimeters of the circles at the Memoriale. The modules are connected with a button in the inner radius, where each element’s perimeter becomes part of its opposite.
