MIZZI STUDIO UNVEILS THREE HOLISTIC GLOBAL INITIATIVES AIMED AT FOSTERING A BALANCED AND REGENERATIVE FUTURE FOR US ALL

Mizzi Studio, the multi-award-winning interdisciplinary architecture and design practice based in London and Valletta, has unveiled three pioneering global initiatives: The Carbon Garden & Pavilion for The Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew; The Living Bridge for the Green School Bali and the holistic vision of The Blue Lagoon, Comino for the Malta Tourism Authority.
This trio of holistic projects reflects the studio’s mission to combine technology with physical craft to create spaces that nourish the spirit, appeal to a human scale and inspire a sense of wonder. The team achieves this by thoughtfully considering every element of the ecosystem – from plant to planet – and by recognising the importance of moving beyond sustainability towards a regenerative design practice that actively restores our environment, protecting and increasing biodiversity.
May 2025 saw the culmination of The Living Bridge Project, a two-year, design journey led by studio founder, Jonathan Mizzi, in collaboration with the students, educators and parents of the Green School Bali, globally recognised as a leader in sustainable education.
As part of the school’s curriculum, Jonathan, also a Green School parent and mentor, developed a brief with students to reimagine The Bridge, a co-working and co-learning centre originally repurposed from the school’s recycling centre to house workshops, talks and parent-led initiatives.
Through community pitches, design reviews and grassroots fundraising, the space has undergone a dramatic transformation.
Now a living, breathing environment, the new Bridge embraces both tradition and innovation, honouring Bali’s artisanal heritage while advancing global conversations about education, community and regenerative design.
It was constructed from over 300 pieces of locally harvested bamboo, shaped using advanced heat-bending techniques developed by local experts, Bamboo Pure, making this one of the first of its kind in Bali.
The structure draws inspiration from nature’s own intelligence system, the Wood Wide Web, the underground fungal network that connects trees and mirrored here in the web of human collaboration that brought this vision to life.
Mizzi Studio was also honoured to be selected to design a pavilion for the new Carbon Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in southwest London. Opening this July, this groundbreaking new regenerative landscape will set new international standards for carbon-positive architecture and ecosystem restoration whilst also inspiring visitors to connect with their natural surroundings and plant life.
This permanent new garden and pavilion within London’s largest UNESCO World Heritage Site aims to reveal the invisible, bringing to life the critical role carbon plays in sustaining life on Earth, communicating the scale of the climate crisis and sharing the extraordinary potential of the natural world to combat it.
Imagined as a centrepiece of the garden that appears to grow from the ground, the pavilion is inspired by the symbiotic relationship between the plant and fungal kingdoms and has been created using low carbon, natural materials.
The space will also provide shelter for school visits and community activities, while the pavilion’s forward-tilting canopy will direct rainwater into a dedicated rain garden. The Carbon Garden & Pavilion marks a return to Kew Gardens for Jonathan Mizzi and his team following their much-acclaimed design of the multi-sensory Family Kitchen restaurant in 2022.
In recognition of Mizzi Studio’s experience and values-driven regenerative design approach, The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has appointed the team to deliver its Holistic Vision for the Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino. The project aims to restore, upgrade and protect the delicate ecosystem of one of Malta’s most widely recognised natural phenomena and preserve its natural beauty for generations to
come.
The site is a designated Natura 2000 protected area under the EU’s conservation network, an initiative to conserve Europe’s most valuable and threatened species and habitats. The Blue Lagoon Holistic Vision is a key part of MTA’s strategy to alleviate pressure here through thoughtful, restorative and low-impact intervention, while also encouraging visitor access to other key cultural spaces across Comino.
Mizzi Studio’s design will remain sensitive to the island’s unique ecological and geological context, using traditional and natural materials to blend seamlessly with the landscape.
Concludes Jonathan Mizzi,
“These three projects represent the heart of our studio’s mission: to design spaces that regenerate, inspire and respond to the needs of both people and planet and to craft a harmonious future for all living things through architecture and design that are rooted in community, culture and climate.”
