Bisca’s Unique Staircase Legacy: 30 Years of Architectural Expression & Spatial Design

For 30 years, Bisca has challenged one of architecture’s most overlooked assumptions; showcasing that a staircase can be much more than simply a means of ascent.

To the discerning architect, the staircase offers an opportunity to create a sculptural element, and has the power to define its surrounding space. Yet more often than not, its full potential is compromised.

Staircase Inspiration – Rooted in Craft and Creativity

Founded in 1995 by designer and blacksmith Richard McLane, what began in a shipyard in Glasgow has evolved into a world-class studio and workshop in North Yorkshire — Bisca is one of very few staircase specialists offering a true end-to-end service: from concept, design and procurement to fabrication, logistics and final installation.

Over three decades, their team has designed and delivered more than 950 unique staircases for some of the world’s most exceptional properties.

“Our commissions span continents and typologies — from luxury ski resorts in the USA to converted barns in Northumberland. But the ethos is always the same: our staircases belong to their building and its owner — both structurally, aesthetically, and emotionally,” explains Richard McLane, founder and design director at Bisca.

A Spatial Anchor – Creating A Statement Without Compromise

In the early stages of an architectural project, it’s easy to defer decisions on the staircase. But this can lead to compromise — awkward geometry, disjointed materials, or missed opportunities to enhance spatial flow. This is where Bisca brings value.

Working alongside architects from the very beginning, their team first explores how a statement staircase will act as a spatial anchor — influencing circulation, enhancing light, and adding moments of pause or drama. Materials are not limited in range, while structural integration, sightlines, and the dialogue between staircase and surrounding architecture are each considered. Every decision is intentional.

The result is not an isolated structure, but a seamless extension of an architect’s vision.

Unique Staircase Design – Without Limitation

For architects with ambitious ideas, it is the role of a staircase specialist to provide inspiration and make them viable. Bisca is not just a team of craftspeople; they have built up one of the most talented teams of designers, engineers and problem solvers within the industry. There are no boundaries….

  • Almost an illusion; cantilevered staircases suspended from a wall with no visible fixings
  • Award winning projects; reclaimed canal lock gates, carved into treads for a unique barn conversion
  • limitless material options; from curved glass, bronze patina, or hand-stitched leather – all crafted in-house

Having built dedicated workshops – these fuse time-honoured blacksmithing with modern technologies, such as 5-axis CNC machining, SolidWorks 3D CAD modelling, and advanced metal finishing techniques — all under one roof.

No outsourcing. No constraints. No standardisation.

Collaboration That Inspires Creativity

Architects who work with Bisca often comment on the freedom that comes hand in hand with their collaboration – removing both technical and logistical barriers that can otherwise inhibit design ambition.

“The main stair is a triumph of design and engineering which provides a spectacular space in the centre of the house. It is widely admired I know, by both client and all those who have visited the property.”  Ric Blenkharn FRIBA FRSA, Bramhall Blenkharn Leonard

Bisca has partnered with globally renowned developers, including Spink, who commissioned over 20 staircases in the early years. These relationships have taught them how to collaborate — not compete — with architectural vision.

“Whether the staircase be destined for a private country residence, a coastal retreat, or a listed barn conversion, our clients accept nothing short of perfection,” Richard affirms. “They don’t just want a staircase. They want us to create an experience which entwines movement with emotion.”

Let The Staircase Tell the Story

The best architectural gestures do more than serve a function — they tell a story. Statement staircases become memory points, conversation pieces, and expressive fixtures within a home.

As Bisca celebrates 30 years of design, innovation, and collaboration, we invite architects to think differently about what a staircase can be.

The staircase is not just a necessity — it is a design opportunity waiting to be realised.
