Maria Cristina Didero meets Philippe Malouin The Genesis of the HUM Faucet Collection

Launching internationally from May 2025

In 2023, an encounter; in 2025, the unveiling of the complete HUM faucet collection – a period during which Philippe Malouin and the QuadroDesign team shared stories and exchanged ideas. On one side stands a designer indifferent to fleeting trends, reducing objects to their essential form to create timeless, radical pieces driven by a single principle: clarity, leaving only what is necessary.

On the other side, a company founded on precision, sustainability, and honesty of materials. Conversations with Enrico Magistro, Art Director and co-owner alongside his sister Elena, allowed Malouin to explore the heritage of stainless steel– whose durability, resilience, and timelessness form the foundation of the project. The challenge was to eliminate any superfluous detail, allowing the material’s inherent qualities to speak for themselves.

Hum is now a comprehensive collection created for the bathroom environment, launched internationally. The design process began with a simple moment of inspiration: holding a stainless steel cylinder, Malouin was struck by its purity and permanence.

This led to the introduction of a single contrasting curve – forming the entire collection. Although Malouin’s work spans multiple disciplines, the mechanics of water was a completely new domain. Collaborating with the QuadroDesign team meant navigating a highly technical space where precision is non-negotiable.

Every decision was aimed at balancing aesthetics with engineering, ensuring the faucets not only looked effortless but also functioned flawlessly. This process refined Malouin’s approach, infusing his design work with even greater purpose.

In an interview, Maria Cristina Didero – curator, historian, and author – poses seven questions to explore the origins of this collaboration, the design process, and the technical and creative challenges faced along the way. The narrative reveals a profound connection not only between material, aesthetics, and functionality but also between the company and the designer.

Today, the collection includes wash-basin mixers of various heights and multiple-hole versions, wall-mounted mixers with integrated spouts, two- and three-hole basin sets, shower sets, bathtub mixers, free-standing bathtub mixers, hand showers, and shower heads.
