SUN, designed by LundbergDesign for Platek, is the ideal floodlight for the Underground Railway Station in Lublin, one of the most sustainable installations of its kind in Poland

SUN is a family of floodlights, designed by the LundbergDesign studio, in various sizes and powers, with white or dynamic light, suitable for fulfilling all outdoor lighting requirements. The design is strictly technical, but with highly attractive overtones, typical of the Scandinavian firm’s philosophy “… Our approach combines the timeless principles of Scandinavian design – simplicity, functionality and elegance – with cutting-edge innovations to create visually attractive and functional projects.” Olle Lundberg
The firm’s thirty plus years of extensive experience in design and its expertise in working with Platek materials, has resulted in a product design where form and function are identified and perfectly combined, defined by changes in surfaces and materials with a focus on the optics of the technological device.
The Warsaw-based, architectural firm Tremend and the lighting design studio QLAB in Katowice chose the SUN floodlight for these features, to complete the Lublin Underground Railway System, which is the heart of the Integrated Transport Centre – a communications hub in the capital of Lublin’s voivodeship (Eastern Poland), connecting urban, regional and national transport.
The project’s signature features are the wonderful, stunning perforated pillars that support a decorative canopy roof, discretely illuminated by eighty SUN light fixtures, integrated into the structure.
The city of Lublin which commissioned the project, given its vicinity to the Główny Railway Station — Lublin Central Railway Station — a 19th century building, wanted to revive and regenerate the area in which the former secondary bus station is located. The 70’s era building features a steel skeleton with masonry beams and walls.
Tremend deliberately designed a modernist structure to contrast the railway station, successfully creating a balance between the two buildings through the introduction of sustainable solutions to reduce carbon emissions. Natural colours and materials, such as wood, stone, cement and stainless steel, were used to achieve this. This is the direction taken by Platek’s SUN floodlight, which is made of highly resistant and long-lasting aluminium alloy, far above market standards.
The project developed by Tremend for the 2019 competition was described as follows:
“The new station should be a welcoming space for residents while respecting the environment. As a result, the roof garden, which will be open to visitors, and the wall of one of the ‘boxes’, will create a green area connecting the station to Ludowy Park. An anti-smog ‘cube’ will be positioned around the building and the area will be planted with plants that boost oxygen production. In addition to the stops for urban and regional buses, the project also includes an underground car park, taxi stands, bicycle racks and charging stations for electric vehicles. From the busy car park, Plac Dworcowy will become a pleasant walkway, creating a visual and functional connection to the railway station.”
