Piaval renews its presence at Clerkenwell Design Week, from 21 to 23 May, and continues to celebrate a special anniversary, the 100th anniversary of a company that still bases its entrepreneurial heritage on artisan know-how.

The ability to innovate and the constant search for quality have been the fil-rouge of a century of activity in the production of design chairs, according to a philosophy that privileges wood at the centre of every project, a precious material that Piaval chooses with care, working it with passion and deep technical knowledge.

For visitors to CDW19, in the context of Design Field, Piaval offers the latest collections for the contract and hospitality sector, designed by Matteo Thun and GarciaCumini, which confirm that each Piaval product is the perfect manifesto of its mission: to produce chairs that stand out for their design, comfort, versatility and functionality.

Dafne, marks the start of collaboration with architect Matteo Thun. It is a padded armchair, able to welcome the body in a soft embrace, offering maximum comfort. A refined yet functional model: Dafne’s sinuous profile is interrupted by the opening of the backrest, which elegantly lightens its geometry and makes it easy to handle.

The soul of Dafne is a structure in solid wood, a material that Piaval works with respect and expertise that are the result of an important artisan heritage, but using advanced industrial technologies to offer functionality, precision and robustness in every project.

A careful selection of coverings and finishes gives life to a customizable proposal, which follows the evolution of hospitality and contract. Dafne can find space in different types of relational spaces, always succeeding in its objective: to transfer harmony and intimacy to the rooms, improving the quality of life and the comfort of those who live them.

Herringbone, born from the consolidated collaboration with the design studio GarciaCumini, is a seating collection that combines competence, in-depth knowledge of the material, experimentation and meticulous technological research. Its essence is an enveloping shell in curved plywood, decorated with a graphic sign recurring in the world of decorative arts: the Herringbone.

“The creative process that gave birth to Herringbone” – explains Vicente Garcia – “is the result of a journey through time that reinterprets and renews the production processes of the industrial design of the 1950s. We went back with our minds to that period, analyzing the industrial technology applied then in the curvature of multilayer wood. We studied the iconic models, and then imagined – through a sliding door that links past and present – a new path: inspired by traditional techniques, projected into the present but alternative to the evolution that, in a more recent industrial phase, led to 3D application.”

This is the path that gave rise to the bodywork that so deeply characterizes the entire collection: unlike the iconic models that inspired it, made up of a single curved element, Herringbone is composed of two distinct parts, perfectly mirroring each other. A choice that determines a particular depth of curvature and is also a tribute to the theme of symmetry, a principle dear to architecture but also closely linked to nature, which the eye naturally associates with an ideal of beauty.

A versatile collection, which responds to the different needs of the contract industry and offers a range of solutions changing look and function depending on the base and accessories, fits perfectly into environments of any size and with different uses. Solid wooden legs, steel tubulars, race-shaped swivel bases… give life to a range of models in different heights, ranging from chairs to bar stools, office and waiting seats.
