Bespoke artwork transforms new Therapy Department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

CW+, the official charity of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, has installed bespoke artwork by photographer Lily Bertrand-Webb and printmaker Clare Halifax to transform the newly refurbished Adult Therapy Outpatient Department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

The CW+ Arts Team worked closely with both Bertrand-Webb and Halifax, along with the Trust’s Therapy Team, on a suite of enhancements to enrich the patient and staff experience, successfully turning the lower-ground floor department into a light, nature-inspired environment.

Halifax worked with both teams to create five designs depicting green spaces in the local area. The resulting works feature Battersea Park and riverside, Kyoto Gardens in Holland Park, and Chelsea Physic Gardens. Therapy staff chose the images they wanted to be developed into the final designs.

The teams collaborated with Bertrand-Webb on bespoke lightboxes in the ceiling panels to create the illusion of sky and tree canopies. The images were taken in spring 2024 on the theme of ‘Looking up’. She shot her work on film and scanned them for use in the panels, giving the images a realistic quality. The Therapy Team again selected the images they wanted in each room.

Bertrand-Webb, who has a personal connection to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, said: ‘I was overjoyed to be commissioned by CW+ for this project. Having lost my hearing at two years old, I now wear a cochlear implant. Growing up, I spent a lot of time in hospitals, and I had an operation at Chelsea and Westminster, so it felt like the perfect commission for me. I hope this will give other patients the chance to think and reflect during their time here’.

Laura Bradshaw, Arts Programme Manager at CW+, said: ‘We are proud of the role we have played in making the new Adult Therapy Department a welcoming space for patients and staff. It was a pleasure to work so collaboratively with Clare and Lily, along with the Therapy Team, to bring our collective vision to life.’
