How to create the perfect garden space

Garden buildings have seen a 300% increase during lockdown, people are looking to create their office, yoga studio, gym or playroom in their back garden to avoid getting on public transport altogether.

The great thing about garden buildings is that you don’t need planning permission as they come under permitted development guidelines which are:

  • No outbuilding on land forward of a wall forming the principal elevation.
  • Outbuildings and garages to be single storey with maximum eaves height of 2.5 metres and maximum overall height of four metres with a dual pitched roof or three metres for any other roof.
  • Maximum height of 2.5 metres in the case of a building.
  • No verandas, balconies or raised platforms
  • No more than half the area of land around the “original house”* would be covered by additions or other buildings.

The cost of building can vary depending on the features,  at ATT Fabrications prices range from £6000 – £8095.

If you choose to use this space as an office then you will require electricity, make sure your local electrician is qualified to handle Part P electrical safety tasks. You will also require a certificate that proves that the work meets regulations. Getting the details right of your new space is essential, such as the lighting and temperature. The prime temperature of an office is between 16°C and 24°C, so it would be best to try and emulate these conditions.

Here at ATT Fabrications, our garden buildings are manufactured with temperature control in mind and each building has been fitted or can be added with specifications to ensure that you stay comfortable. These include:

  • Low e-Argon filled glass units which hold heat exceptionally.
  • 28mm double glazed glass windows which will help to keep heat in during the winter months.
  • 75mm insulation can be added to the building as an optional extra or you could supply the insulation yourself.
  • Double doors that can be opened to let cool air into the building

There are financial perks to creating a home office space, saving £100s on train and bus fares. TotalJobs reports that the average commuter in the UK will spend £135,000 by the time they retire, workers in London spending an average of £300 a month. Creating a separate work space from your living space can also be great for your mental health, helping alleviate stress and anxiety.
