Mayor approves 50% affordable housing revision to Barking Riverside

The mayor of London has approved Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands’ revised plans for Barking Riverside, paving the way for 10,000 new homes – half of which will be affordable.
Sadiq Khan gave the green light for a reworked masterplan for the east London area with a target of 50 per cent affordable housing – an increase on the initial designs for the development backed by previous mayor Boris Johnson, which had only 28 per cent affordable housing.
The newly agreed plan sets a minimum affordable housing target of 35 per cent from the outset, but includes provisions to raise this to 50 per cent over time through additional investment and viability reviews.
The proposal, hailed as the single largest regeneration scheme in the capital, is in line with Khan’s aim to make half of all new homes built in London affordable.
